Instructional Design

Instructional design is the cornerstone of effective e-training.

A fallacious assumption implicit in many e-training projects is that e-learning is simply a different version of classroom training or computer-based training (CBT).

e-training group™ takes the position that e-training:

is functionally different from classroom training or CBT.
creates new roles for instructors / facilitators.
challenges learners and requires new self-directed learning skills.
requires modified instructional design strategies.

Instructional design imperatives for e-training include:

Reflect the reality of the job.
Focus on performance.
Provide a problem-based / case-based approach if possible.
Focus on learner interactivity and collaboration.

Key instructional design activities include:

developing learner profiles
specifying training / learning goals, objectives and outcomes
identifying training content sources (including producing in-house)
specifying the structure and sequence of content
designing / specifying instructional strategies including learning activities and media
specifying learner support
specifying learner assessment and program evaluation strategies

The output is a blueprint that forms the basis for developing and implementing your e-training.

Use short-cycle development (rapid prototyping) combined with learner testing and revision to validate your e-training system design prior to full-scale development and implementation.
